Overview
New Horizon Academy teaches the traditional middle and high school curricula. We offer core courses and electives in mathematics, science, social studies, English, humanities, arts, foreign languages, and physical education. In addition to regular classes, we offer independent studies in a wide variety of subjects; our size allows us to customize a curriculum for each student.
Accreditations
Accreditation is a critical marker of school quality. Accreditation by a recognized body indicates that a school is doing a good job educating students. Graduates of accredited schools can go to college, work for corporations, or join the military.
New Horizon Academy is accredited by three highly reputable bodies. We are accredited by the Association of Independent Schools of Florida, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (AdvancEd), and the Middle States Association. Our diplomas and transcripts are recognized throughout the USA and internationally.
Parent Meetings & Progress Reports
We have parent meetings several times yearly. However, we do not rest on formality; parents can stop by or call any time they want. Our small size allows us to know every student and work with every family.
Formal reports are sent out every three weeks and report cards every nine weeks. We want parents to know how their children are performing.
Technology
New Horizon Academy completed a $50,000 technology upgrade. We have all new computers with the latest software, new projectors, document cameras, microscopes, electronic pens, cameras, printers, and copiers.
Dual enrollment
New Horizon Academy students are eligible to take college classes at local universities. These classes earn both high school and college credits. Dually enrolled students leave high school with college credits and skills that facilitate the transition to full-time higher education. For more information visit Palm Beach State’s Dual Enrollment pages here.
Games
New Horizon Academy strives to make learning more engaging and relevant. We are implementing a games-based curriculum that will improve both academic and social skills while adding a fun element to classwork.
Independent Study and Virtual Learning
Our small size and customized approach allows us to create programs designed to meet individual needs. We have access to a virtually unlimited catalog of independent study and online classes.
Outside of NHA, independent study and virtual courses have poor success rates; the majority of courses are never completed. New Horizon Academy is different from other programs; we provide proctors and mentors on site so that students benefit from the structure and expertise only a school can provide.
Standardized Testing vs. FCAT
Standardized testing is a good way to measure student progress. When used appropriately, standardized testing helps a school improve student outcomes. We use the Stanford Achievement Test to assess our students’ progress. Since its inception in 1926, educators have relied on Stanford to measure achievement. We do not use the FCAT.
Open Door Policy
Communication is a critical part of success. We are always available to students and parents.
